RAID: Getting disk types behind raid controller with StorCli on Lenovo 2017-11-11 10:06:28

Over vcenter or ESXi management interface, it is not possible to understand what kind of
disk types, or what disks the system is using, especially, if they are managed by a Raid controller.

To be able to get models of the disks, we will be using storcli utility on esxi shell. However, first we need to install it.

Firstly, the storcli utiliy is downloaded. For example, at the time being, it accessible with the name "StorCLI (Command Line) Utility for Storage Management v1.20.20 for VMware ESXi Server 6.5 and Linux on Lenovo Scalable Infrastructure Release 17D Best Recipe with the zip file "lsi_utl_sraidmr_storcli-1.20.20_linux_32-64.zip".

i) Extract the vib file from the zip file.

ii) Upload vib file onto a directory on a datastore where the host machine can access.

iii) Install the vib file

$ esxcli software vib install -v=/vmfs/volumes/datastore2/iso/vmware-esx-storcli-1.20.20.vib --no-sig-check


iv) Run the storcli to get the drive (disk) models.

$ cd /opt/lsi/storcli
$ ./storcli /c0 show

As you can see the controller 0 has a virtual drive of type RAID5 having 4 of them Online.
and the models of the disks are AL13SEB300 and ST300MM0006, which are Toshiba and Seagate respectively.
